Today, Inspector General Mark Lee Greenblatt is recognizing National Whistleblower Appreciation Day by honoring whistleblowers who have helped identify fraud, waste, and abuse at the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI).

National Whistleblower Appreciation Day occurs each year on July 30 to commemorate the significant contributions of whistleblowers throughout history. To mark the day this year, Inspector General Greenblatt is honoring a whistleblower who provided valuable information to our office which led to an investigation and the eventual resolution of serious health and safety issues.

Also today, the DOI Office of Inspector General is releasing a new educational video to help remind DOI employees and members of the public about whistleblower rights and protections and how to report fraud, waste, or abuse to the DOI OIG Hotline.

“The whistleblower that we honor today showed great courage by putting public service above self,” said Inspector General Greenblatt. “Whistleblowers like today’s honoree provide an invaluable service to the American public. Some of our office’s most significant audits, investigations and reviews were originated because of information received from whistleblowers. Today, we commend everyone who has spoken up when they saw something wrong and helped ensure that Government is effective and accountable.”

Individuals who are aware of fraud, waste, abuse, or misconduct should contact the DOI OIG Hotline at www.doioig.gov/oig-hotline-forms.
