OIG investigated allegations from the Office of Law Enforcement Services, Crow Creek Agency (CCA), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), that a BIA employee removed recyclable metal from a condemned BIA-owned school building and sold the metal for personal gain. In addition, we investigated allegations of an additional theft of recyclable metal from the school.
Our investigation confirmed the employee and a business associate removed several trailer loads of metal from the building, sold the material to a recycler for $2,200, and split the proceeds. We also found that during the same period, a local resident also stole metal from the same building and sold it to a recycler for $400.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota declined prosecution of this investigation.
This is a summary of a report that was issued to BIA for any action deemed appropriate.
