Description
OIG investigated allegations that a National Park Service (NPS) superintendent hired her roommate and lover to a 1-year term appointment under the superintendent’s direct supervision. The allegations further stated that the superintendent and the roommate co-owned property.

We determined that the superintendent did hire her roommate to fill the 1-year term position, but we found no evidence suggesting that they are lovers or that they own property together. We did find, however, that NPS hired the roommate without fulfilling all of the necessary hiring requirements. NPS addressed this issue by posting a vacancy announcement on USAJOBS. After receiving several applications, NPS ultimately determined that the roommate was the best qualified candidate for the position.
