Investigation of Oil Theft from an Offshore Production Platform

OIG investigated allegations that a group of unknown individuals conspired to steal oil from a production platform in the Gulf of Mexico. We consulted with Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) officials, who reported that the scheme would have required the platform to be made inoperable. In addition, numerous individuals from multiple companies would have had to conspire with BSEE employees to conceal the theft. Our review of the platform did not reveal altered equipment, and interviews we conducted did not corroborate the allegations.
