In accordance with the Reports Consolidation Act of 2000, the OIG has prepared this report to summarize the most significant management and performance challenges facing the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). By statute this list is required to be included in the DOI’s Agency Financial Report for fiscal year 2018.
Nine challenge areas are included in this year’s report, namely workplace culture and ethics, energy management, public safety and disaster response, information technology, water programs, responsibility to American Indians and Insular Areas, acquisition and financial assistance, climate effects, and operational efficiencies.
This report is based on specific OIG and U.S. Government Accountability Office reviews and other reports, as well as our general knowledge of the DOI’s programs and operations. We met with DOI officials to gain their perspective on these challenge areas.
The identified challenge areas reflect continuing vulnerabilities and emerging issues faced by the DOI.
