Description

The October 2013 Semiannual Report to Congress summarizes the Office of Inspector General's dedicated and successful work completed from April 1, 2013, through September 30, 2013. Our audit and investigative work focused on high priority areas, such as energy, climate change, public safety, and theft of Government funds, to promote excellence, integrity, and accountability within the programs, operations, and management of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Our audits, inspections, and evaluations work primarily reviewed issues related to energy, health and safety, climate change, and DOI operations. Our investigative work overwhelmingly focused on wrongdoing in Indian Country, involving theft from tribes, bribery, and embezzlement. We also include a summary of our review of the United States Park Police's weapons inventory, conducted in response to allegations of chronic improper weapons management.

In addition, we detailed the excellent work completed by our Whistleblower Protection Program, which has become a positive model for establishing a meaningful program at other Government agencies. Our program processed more than 50 complaints during the reporting period, and we report on two advisories sent to departmental entities.

We look forward to continuing our excellent work into the current fiscal year to provide objective, timely, and actionable reports to our customers and stakeholders.
