Deputy Inspector General
Dr. Brzymialkiewicz joined the Office of Inspector General (OIG) within the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) in September 2020 as the Deputy Inspector General. She works closely with the Inspector General to lead the full range of OIG activities, including assisting the IG in developing and implementing strategic initiatives, directing the OIG’s nationwide audit and investigations programs, supervising legal and administrative management programs, and engaging with critical stakeholders, including Department leadership and members of Congress and their staffs.
Prior to DOI OIG, Caryl was the first Chief Data and Analytics Officer within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General. There, she created an enterprise data and analytics office focused on empowering OIG staff to use data proactively to support their oversight work of a >$1.4 trillion portfolio of programs. Prior to HHS OIG, Caryl was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Risk and Decision Analysis at the Department of Homeland Security. She also served as the Operations Research Division Chief at the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization, and led a team of analysts at the Center for Naval Analyses, including spending time in Afghanistan. Caryl has been drawn to the hard problems: detecting breast cancer; analyzing and optimizing detection and countering of roadside bombs in Afghanistan and Iraq; quantifying legal and illegal immigration; and countering healthcare fraud and the opioid epidemic. Her leadership roles have included building and sustaining high-performance, multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-quality products for decision making and action to tackle these complex problems.
Caryl earned a B.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.
